Mildred Y. (Mickens) Washington, 80 of Frostburg, MD and formerly of Piedmont, WV passed away September 20, 2018 at Blue Ridge Hospice, Winchester, VA.
Born January 22, 1938 in Moorefield, WV, one of eight children, Mildred was lovingly raised by her grandmother, the late Mary Susan Mickens. Mildred was predeceased by her father and mother, Joseph I. and Carrie M. (Mickens) Phillips, and her cherished daughter, Carla Denise Washington.
Mildred’s quest for knowledge was never-ending and she attended: Moorefield High School, Keyser Vocational, Parkersburg Community College, Potomac State and Frostburg State University. Her work-history reflected her positive, can-do attitude. Retiring from the Mineral County Board of Education in Keyser, WV after 27 years of service, Mildred taught special need children at the Clary Street Learning Center for 17 years providing older students the living skills needed for work and home. From Clary Street, she went to Keyser Primary Middle School where she taught reading as a part of the Title I program.
Always a creative person, Mildred opened and ran The Country Nitch for nine years. The Nitch was her home studio, a cozy residential gift ship for selling and showcasing her own creations and decorating ideas.
Mildred was deeply involved in various charities and organizations. She was the spokesperson for mentally and physically abused women at the Family Crises Center, worked tirelessly for the Special Olympics, participated in the Summer Story-telling programs at the Piedmont Library; was a Boy’s Scouts of American Den Mother, and also an annual volunteer with Toys for Happiness.
A wonderful mother she is survived by her beloved children: Robin Seabury (Landon Brown) of Charleston, WV, Theodore (Clarence) Washington (Jennifer Riggs) of Fredericksburg, VA, Christa Hagins and her husband Carl, of Bowie, MD and Melissa Washington of Pittsburgh, PA., and her grandchildren: Michaella, Madison, Marissa, Grant, Blake Griffin and Hudson, as well as her dear friend Sharon Junkins.
In 1985, Mildred made arrangements to donate her body for research.
