John Gulck Sr.

March 14, 1941 — February 22, 2022

Frostburg

John K. Gulck, Sr., 80 years old, went to be with his Heavenly Father on 2/22/2022.  He was born on March 14, 1941, in Baltimore, MD. John was a devout Christian and always handed his problems over to the Lord as well as giving thanks for his many blessings. He always trusted God’s will.

John was preceded in death by his father, Georg Gulck, his mother, Irene (Bloch) Gulck, and his brother Fred Gulck.

John is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Mary Jane (Moore) Gulck, his daughter, Annette McKenzie and her husband, Edward McKenzie, his daughter Kellee Smith, his son John Gulck, Jr. and his partner, Jeanna Miller, his grandson, Coty McKenzie, and his wife, Jenna McKenzie, his grandson Chandler Gulck, and fianceé, Taylor Lloyd, and 2 great-granddaughters.

John was a retired Colonel in the U.S. Air Force. He proudly served 30 years in the U.S. Air Force Reserves and completed one tour of duty in Vietnam. He saluted every single American Flag he passed by until he became ill.

In his early years, John worked three jobs to care for his family while furthering his education. He achieved his doctorate degree in Education along with 2 master’s degrees. He taught junior high school in Baltimore, MD, before relocating to Cumberland, MD. He began his career with the Allegany County Board of Education in 1975 in pupil services where he helped the children of Allegany County. He always put the needs of the students first and was their greatest advocate ensuring all children were able to achieve their education. After retiring from Allegany County Board of Education, he became the last principal of St. Peter’s Catholic School in Westernport, a job he truly loved. John was a man of high integrity and great moral character. While highly educated and professionally achieved, there was not a single person John couldn’t carry a conversation with. He loved to talk about “the old days”. Anytime John saw someone without a coat in the cold, he would give them his own. He was generous to both the church and the homeless.

John loved to walk, counting his steps to make sure he got his miles completed. He also enjoyed strumming his guitar and singing. He loved to sing karaoke. While he loved walking and music, John’s #1 hobby was playing with his children and grandchildren. John was a beloved husband, the greatest father in the world, and the best grandfather too. His titles included Sweetheart, Daddy, Pop-Pop, Colonel, and Doctor. He will be greatly missed by his family. His children would like to say to him one more time, "Thanks for being our dad!"

The family would like to Thank the staff at the Egle Nursing Home for their excellent care.

His body was cremated as per his request and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Westernport on Thursday March 3, 2022 at 1PM with Father Ed Hendricks officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from Noon until the time of Mass.. Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard will provide military honor.

Inurnment will be held at Sunset Memorial Park Veterans Cemetery following mass. The family requested that memorials be directed to The Alzheimer’s Association PO Box 1950 Clarksburg, MD 20871.
