John W. Dailey, 78, formerly of Westernport, died July 24, 2021. He was the son of Michael J. Dailey and Katherine Getty Dailey Hartig. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Tiller Dailey, sons John Dailey of Maine and David Dailey and wife, Nafis Noori, of Chicago, and brother M. Joseph Dailey, Florida, sisters F. Getty Reeves of San Francisco, and Mary Clare Crable of Barton, and numerous nephews and a niece.
John was a graduate of St. Peter's School, Potomac State University, University of Maryland, and University of Virginia for his doctorate. He spent 1-1/2 years at Karolinska Institute in Sweden, following which he worked at Cleveland Clinic, and began teaching pharmacology at George Washington University in D.C. He then taught at Louisiana State University in Shreveport. After Louisiana State University, John taught at the University of Illinois Medical School, Peoria, where he was a professor in the Pharmacology Department until his retirement.
John and Mary retired to St. James Plantation, Southport, NC, in 2003. He had a lung transplant in 2015. In 2019 John and Mary moved to Durham, NC. John was a member of the Rotary Club and first president of the Midwest Affiliate of the Heart Association.
The family will be forever grateful to his lung donor, the Duke pulmonary team ante the nursing care that allowed him to have more time with family and friends.
